Weekly Update 02.05.25

02 May 2025

We believe that our children should have the aspiration and opportunity to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ and ‘Shine like stars in the sky’.

VE DAY CELEBRATIONS
Hopefully, John – our young evacuee scarecrow, hasn’t given you too much of a fright as you have come around the corner into school this morning!  Many thanks to Mrs Lancaster and the children at after-school club who worked together to create him.  He could still do with perhaps an old-fashioned cap and suitcase, especially as the temperatures are due to be a little cooler next week.  If anyone is able to loan any items to enhance his appearance and make him even more authentic, just let us know.  We are all looking forward to marking VE Day next week, both in and out of school.  Please see ‘Community News’ below for more details.

RIVER STUDIES
We are delighted that, thanks to National Lottery players, we shall be welcoming volunteers from the Yorkshire Dales River Trust on Tuesday to work with the children in KS2. The visit is free of charge, made possible with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.  This field trip will cover the Geography programme of study, looking at the water cycle, the journey of a river, the physical characteristics and features of rivers and their key processes, and an exploration of freshwater ecosystems through studying the freshwater invertebrates. The second activity will also address Science: Living things and their habitats, and the use of simple identification keys, using our freshwater invertebrates sample.   We’ll let you know how it goes!

Reminders…
UNIFORM
As we start the summer term, we have had a few queries about uniform and we know that the sudden warmer weather has caught out a few families, especially with footwear as we swap from boots to shoes!  Please take a look the school uniform page under the ‘Parent’ tab on the school website for details.  School shoes should be black and trainers and joggers/leggings should only be worn for PE please.  It is always useful to keep PE kit in school throughout the week, especially in the summer term.  We have also reminded children that jewellery should not be worn at school, with the exception of plain stud earrings.  These MUST be removed for PE lessons.  We kindly request that any children thinking of having their ears pierced wait until the beginning of the 6-week summer holiday.  Thank you.
And with uniform in mind…

Please see the Friends of St Nicholas School Facebook page for more details and send a message to Jen Whitehouse on 07824 355024 if you'd like anything.
