Music

22 Nov 2022

At Kirkby Malzeard ans St Nicholas there are lots of opportunities to make music. We have a whole-school singing assembly every week, weekly class music lessons with a specialist music teacher, and visiting instrumental teachers from the Music Hub. We also listen to music and sing in collective worship, in class and of course there is lots of music making in EYFS!

In class music lessons with Mrs Harris we are following a Music Express scheme of work. This is a varied programme which enables children to sing, compose, play instruments and listen in a carefully structured progressive manner. We are developing our singing voices, pulse and rhythm awareness and listening skills through songs, musical games and composition tasks, and being exposed to music from different cultures, contexts and historical times.

Other opprtunities in our Music curriculum:

Various musical clubs have run in the past few years, including drumming club, choir club and singing games club. This term we have a music club where pupils can sing, play musical games and try out a variety of instruments. As a school we are usually preparing to sing for events in the community, such as the Patronal festival and community Christmas lunch. We have regular performance opportunities in school, including the hugely successful Y6 summer show (2023 "The Island that Rocks") and also out of school, such as the Young Voices concert last year where we took over 30 pupils to perform in Sheffield Arena.

Last year Cedar and Asteroids class took part in a String instrument project with a teacher from the Music Hub, having class lessons all year on either violin, viola or cello. This was a fantastic experience for the pupils and also raised the profile of instrumental learning in school. Currently we have instrumental teachers coming in to teach pupils the Piano, Guitar, Violin and Cornet across the Fedration. We would love more pupils to take up an instrument, so if they are inspired please contact the Music Hub and find out more. There are some discounts available so please have a look at their website to see if your child is eligible. North Yorkshire Music Hub
