Weekly Updates 9.9.22

09 Sep 2022

Weekly Updates - Week ending 9th September
Welcome back to the start of the new school year: below is some further information you may find helpful.

Diary Dates
The dates for the term have now been uploaded to the school website. Please refer to these for information about what is happening in school. Reminders of these events will also be sent closer to the time, via the weekly updates.

Class Pages
These have important information about timetables and other relevant class information for parents and are now all updated including class teacher email addresses.

Communication with school:
We ask that as a general rule parents contact school for all enquires via the school office. You can do this by:
 · Phone 01677 470329
 · Email admin@west-tanfield.n-yorks.sch.uk
The school office hours are 8.30am until 1pm. (Thursday answer phone only)
Parents are advised to contact teachers via email only when absolutely necessary. You are encouraged to address minor issues and questions in person with your child’s class teacher. Teachers are available at the end of each school day to talk with parents and address any questions or concerns.
Any matters that need to be discussed at length should be done so via a meeting – you can use the teacher’s email address to arrange this meeting. If you need to share something of a sensitive or confidential nature, have a concern, or wish to request a meeting in person, this can be emailed to the class teacher.
Class teachers kindly share their emails with parents (these are available on the class page) but we respectfully request that these are only used for the above correspondence and within working hours where possible. Our school’s policy is to respond to all emails, where possible, within three working days. If your concern is urgent, please contact the school office

Church Services
Due to the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the All-Age Service at West Tanfield has been cancelled.  Instead there will be a simple service of Prayer and Reflection remembering her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Young Voices
We are very excited to announce that we are going to be taking a choir of KS2 children to a Young Voices concert. This is open to all children in Y3-6 at KM and SNWT. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a massive music event at Sheffield Arena and the children get a lot from it.
More details and sign up will follow soon but the date for your diary is Thursday 9th February 2023. Have a look at https://www.youngvoices.co.uk/ or you can start listening to the songs on spotify - Young Voices 2023.

Music Tuition
Individual tuition is still available for all pupils and can be booked via the following link:

Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to help out with events in school such as swimming (Wednesday afternoons), forest school (Wednesday afternoons), readers etc. If you feel you can help, please contact the school office who will organise for the relevant checks to be completed.

Swimming
Swimming lessons start next week on Wednesday 14th September for Asteroid Class (YR3/4/5/6). The balance for this has been loaded to parent pay. Children will need the following:

One-piece costume for girls and shorts for boys (no baggy board shorts please).
Towel
Goggles (optional)

Forest School
Rocket class continue forest school sessions each Wednesday afternoon until Christmas. Children should wear old, comfortable clothes and wellies or trainers for this along with water proof trousers and coats.

Naming Clothes
Please ensure all clothes are clearly named so they can be returned to their owners if lost.

Phonics meeting – Reception parents only
There will be a meeting for parents of Reception children about phonics and early reading. This will be held in the school hall on Monday 12th at 3.30pm and is an opportunity for parents to learn about the importance of early reading and how this is taught in school and can be supported at home. We look forward to seeing you there if you can attend.

Homework
Please look out for the launch of our new homework and reading policy.
This will be sent to parents on Friday 23rd September. We will also be holding meetings for parents to share the policy further and clarify any questions parents may have. These meetings will be held on Wednesday 5.10.22 at 5.00pm at our Kirkby Malzeard site or Tuesday 4.10.22 at 3.30pm at our St Nicholas site. Parents from St Nicholas are welcome to attend the meeting at either venue at the time most convenient to them.

In the meantime, please keep on reading, reading reading!
Have a lovely weekend
