The Awesome Anglo Saxons

29 Oct 2021

This week was a week of speeches and Anglo Saxons.

First of all, we were delighted to perform our fundraising speech once again at a special assembly attended by a representative of the Charity, Ripon City of Sanctuary as well as Mrs Bourne-Arton and Mrs Taylor. The children were delighted and very thankful that even more contributions had been made to this charity, to fund refugee families to the area, from the church and village community following their fundraising efforts.

They have made a video of their speech which we hope to upload onto the school website soon.

Later in the week, we had the most amazing surprise - a visit from a real life 'Anglo-Saxon'! The children were amazed and delighted when Hannah the Anglo Saxon arrived with her medieval backpack full of , well, EVERYTHING!

A hush fell on the classroom when Hannah, our own amazing Anglo-Saxon, arrived.

First of all, all the children had an artefact to look at and guess what it was. We had some great ideas. I think the iron cross designed as a charm to scare away trolls was a favourite - and, no, no-one guessed that one!

«»Hannah then showed us a wonderful range of objects. There were recreated shoes, cloaks, socks, brooches, trousers (one size fits all!) and hand-woven belts...

We were also asked lots of questions about household objects, including pottery and rugs...

AND we learned about armour and we ALL felt the incredible weight of a chain mail vest, while MRs Sharpley tried on a (very very heavy) helmet.

We all know a lot more about Anglo-Saxon life now and huge thanks to Hannah for giving up her day to share her incredible history knowledge and belongings with us. Thank you also to Mr and MRs Petchey who not only organised this for us, but transported Hannah to and from the Dark Ages to school!! More on our Anglo Saxon battle speeches which we delivered on our Anglo-Saxon afternoon next time. Altogether an awesome afternoon!
