Comet Class Weekly News 26th November 2021

Three Cheers for Comet Class
This week has been a very busy one for Comet Class as it has been assessment week across the school.  The children have worked so hard to complete all the tasks presented to them, showing determination and good humour.  They have all tried their absolute best and I could not be prouder of them.  I was particularly impressed with the resilient way in which the children faced these challenges - even when things got tricky, they kept going and did not give up.  Well done to each and every one of you!

As the assessements have taken up much of the week, we have not had as much time as usual for other curriculum work.  However, in English we did manage to have some fun and games re-creating the part of our class story where the swallow peels the leaves of gold from the Happy Prince and lets them rain down over the street children below:

The children watched in delight as the fragments of gold danced, twirled and pirouetted down on them from above and then used this experience to help them include some personification in their writing.  We are now working on the next part of the story when winter approaches (we have certainly had some first-hand experience of that this week too!!)  The children have come up with some wonderful onomatopoeic sounds to use when describing the winter scene in the book.

On Tuesday afternoon, we welcomed Blue Watch from Ripon Fire Service into school.  They came primarily to deliver some important messages about fire safety, talking to the children about the importance of smoke detectors in the home and having an agreed family safety plan so the children know what to do in the event of a fire at home.  Please do take a look at the fire safety posters which the childen have designed to bring home and share...and spend some time talking to them about what they have learned.

The children were rewarded for their super listening skills and discussion work by then being given a tour of the fire engine and all its equipment.  A big thank you to Mr Johnson and all the crew for their time in supporting the children's learning on this important topic.

In PSHE, we have continued to explore the subject of valuing diversity through the theme of 'family and friends'.  We have learned that the word 'family' means different things to different people and that whatever it means to each person should be respected.  I have been blown away by the mature, respectful and insightful way in which the children have discussed this topic.  They have also asked some very thoughtful and sensible questions too.

It has been too difficult to single out any particular children or pieces of work to celebrate this week.  All the Comets have shone like stars - each and everyone of them has been a real trooper (see the first paragraph above) and has earned a shining star for their efforts.  But perhaps a special mention about Charlie this week who did a super job of his presentation for our book of the week.  We were really entertained by Charlie's choice of 'Animal Railway' which had us chuckling to the end.  Thank you, Charlie, for your recommendation - the children really enjoyed the story.

Finally, a few children have brought to my attention that they couldn't see their My Maths homework this week.  I did set some as usual last Friday, but it seems that only some have been able to locate and complete it.  I shall take a look to see if I can resolve the problem.  I won't set any additional homework today but will allow time for a catch up.  Apologies to all those who spent time searching in vain!

Have a lovely, restful weekend - it sounds like we may need to batten down the hatches!  I can already hear the wind howling outside as I type this!  Keep warm and safe everyone.
