Comet Class Weekly News 12th November 2021

Miss Mandelson - 11 Nov 2021

A Week of Contrasts...
As usual, I have thoroughly enjoyed every second of my time with Comet Class this week.  The children have worked so well together and with such enthusiasm as we have continued to explore the contrast between rich and poor in the story of The Happy Prince through role-play.  We have enjoyed re-enacting the part of the story where the affluent, pompous guests look down on the poor, hungry beggars who they pass as they arrive for the grand masquerade ball:

Spot the difference!

First the children made their own Venetian-style masks and chose a fancy outfit to portray their wealth.  On arrival, they soon tucked into and devoured a sumptuous, mouth-watering feast, describing what they could see, taste and smell with words borrowed from TV adverts for a well-known high street store (Hint: This was not just food but...).  As the humble servant discreetly serving a vintage 'vin de Ribena' to the guests, I was in a very good position to eavesdrop on their conversations as they sneered and gossiped about the poor, ragged beggars they had encountered at the gates.  I was very impressed with the quality of adjectives used, albeit a bit taken aback at the transformation of our usually inclusive, kind children into selfish, condescending snobs!  They really are fine actors and put their all into refining their portrayals of such contrasting personalities to their own!  Take a look below:

For guided reading this week, we have been reading and discussing another of Oscar Wilde's classic tales:  The Nightingale and the Rose.  The children were really adept at picking up on common themes in his work as they compared this story with the others we have read.

In Mathematics this week, we have continued to focus on addition and subtraction.  The children have worked really hard on their mental recall number bonds of 100, with the younger children learning which multiples of ten go together to make 100, whilst the older children practised calculating all the pairs of numbers which make 100 at speed.  We have also looked at two-step word problems and how to identify the key information and operations needed to solve them.  This has been quite tricky as the children have been required to think carefully and really concentrate to work through some fairly complex questions.  They have shown great concentration, determination and perseverance, remembering and using what they learned last week to go back and check their answers.

As ever, the Comets have shone like stars in many of their tasks this week.  Look below to see just some of their fantastic work:

Looking ahead to next week, excitement is mounting for our Children in Need event 'St Nicholas has Talent'.  Some children have been keen to tell me their ideas for acts either in groups or as solo performers.  Whilst others have been planning their outfits as we prepare to 'Get our Strictly on'!  We also have our open morning on Thursday when we shall be coming off time-table to do some fun learning activities in role as school pupils of the past (at the children's request)!  Lots to look forward to!  In the meantime...

...have a wonderful weekend, whatever your plans, and I'll see you all on Monday.
