Week commencing 17th May 2021
21 May 2021
Well what a very wet and miserable week it has been but as usual the children have kept us smiling inside with their super attitudes and behaviour.
In Maths this week we have been looking at non-unit fractions of amounts. The children were given a challenge on Tuesday to decide whether they would rather have 2/5 of a tube of Smarties or 3/7 of a tube of Smarties. If they could work out which would give them the most Smarties they would be able to share them between the class but if they got it wrong the Smarties were going into the staff room for the staff to enjoy!! After working really hard with their bar modelling and division skills thankfully (for the children) they were able to correctly work out which tube would give them the largest amount of chocolate and they were able to eat the Smarties.
In geography this week we looked at earthquakes. We reminded ourselves what tectonic plates were and how they moved and then the children learnt where and why earthquakes occur. The Year 3/4 children learnt about the Marcalli scale and had to order the descriptions in order of intensity and the Y5/6 children wrote some fabulous diary entries of their experience in an earthquake. We also learnt what to do if we are ever involved in an earthquake and whilst the children were doing their independent work an alarm sounded and we have to hide under the tables and apply our knowledge on keeping safe.
In RE this week we have looked at how religious believers help in the community. We looked at how the Christian church helps the community in many ways and the Year 3/4 children designed posters to encourage volunteers to come and help at some of these community events. The Year 5/6 children then went on to look at the Zakah (one of the 5 Pillars of Islam) and how giving to charity as a duty helps the Muslim community.
In PSHE this week we continued looking at our Zones of Regulation. We thought about expected and unexpected behaviours in the classroom and the how this makes people feel and behave towards us as well as how we feel as a result of these behaviours too.
We have started learning how to write narrative poetry based on The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. The children made a super start when writing their first stanza.
Here is some of our 'Shining Like Stars' work from this week:
We hope you have a lovely weekend and that it is at least dry for some of it. Miss Asker is very excited to be visiting the cinema for the first time in a very long time now that things are slowly opening back up again - we wonder what your plans are? Have fun!
