Weekly Update - 28.2.2020

28 Feb 2020

What an exciting (if a little unexpected) start to the week we had on Monday. The snow caused problems for some, was an inconvenience to many but was great fun for the children who managed to make it into school. They worked hard in the classroom writing Snow Cinquains and worked hard on the field building snowmen.

Here are some the great cinquains that the children wrote.

bitter, coldness
melting, freezing, glistening
disintegrate, piling, gently.

falling quickly
dangerous avalanche
piling up on window ledges.

gentle, joyful
quiet, bitter, tracing
falling from the trees quietly

Icy, pure white
melting, settling, swirling
spreading white dust around the place

avalanche wet
breath taking, tasty, cold
like icing sugar on a birthday cake.

Snow Day
Icy, great fun
drifting, settling, melting
forming piles of crisp, damp snow

In Maths this week we have started to look at calculating with fractions. We have looked at adding and subtracting fractions and made always, sometimes and never statements using our knowledge and pattern spotting skills. The Year 5/6 children had the tricky job of adding fractions that had different denominators. My Maths homework was set on Wednesday and this reflects the work we have done this week. We have also been trying hard to improve our rapid recall of times tables facts. I have set new sessions for the children on their TT Rockstars account and the children will need to log on and complete these at home.
With Mrs Hatch, the children continued improving and securing their knowledge of addition with carrying digits over into the next column.

In Geography this week we recapped what we have learnt about the four different layers of the rainforest and then the children worked together to investigate different animals that live within each layer and how they have adapted to make sure they are suited to that layer.

In Science we completed our unit on Evolution and Inheritance.

During PE we practised netball skills again ready for the competition next Monday.   The Y5/6 children should have given you a letter by now with details about the competition.  Please note that this letter requires a response.  Many thanks.

We will be continuing our Forest Schools sessions this half term and the children went down to explore some of the changes that have been made down in the forest over half term. 4 of our children stayed back up at school to cook with Mrs Brassington and our final four will be cooking next week.

Next week we are looking forward to taking some of our Year 3/4 pupils to Carlton Lodge. We are all very excited. Make sure that you check back on our page next week to see what we got up to.
