Weekly Update 17.1.20

16 Jan 2020

This week, with Mrs Hatch, the children started looking at a new text.  It is a short story called The Promise by Nicola Davies.  It is a wonderful story full of rich vocabulary and a thought provoking message.  We have done lots of prediction work based on the text and are now moving onto comprhension work.  We will be basing all our English work around it over the next few weeks.
With Miss Asker the children have been looking at hybrid texts and what they are. The children will be writing their own hybrid texts for our friends at Kirkby Malzeard over the coming weeks.

In Maths we revisited place value starting with Roman Numerals - always a favourite topic.  We then moved on to multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10.
With Miss Asker we continued our work on fractions. The year 3/4 children looked at recognising fractions as numbers continuing number sequences and completing number lines. The year 5/6 children continued their work on mixed number and improper fractions and used their problem solving and reasoning skills to further their understanding.

In Geography we developed our mapping skills identifying the Equator and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The children had remembered these really well from our work last term. We then discovered where in the world tropical rainforests were and why they were found there.

In Computing we started a unit of work on spreadsheets. The year 3/4 children had a go at formatting cells and the year 5/6 children had a go at using formulas to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Miss Asker was very impressed with how quickly they pciked up these tricky skills.

In PE we continued practising for the gymnastics competition which is next Monday - the 20th.  Five of the Y4 children were selected to represent our school and we wish them good luck.  We know that they will try their very best and will be a credit to the school.  The five children are:  Maisy, Harrison, Alice, Ava and Emmerson.  Savannah was chosen to be the substitute in case of absence.  Please could all these children practise their routines over the weekend.  It is very important that they perform the routines as smoothly as possible.  Please ensure that they have a clean PE kit ( white round-neck t shirt and black or blue shorts ) at school on Monday, their school jumper and tracksuit bottoms or leggings which they can take to keep warm.  A water bottle would be useful and please remove any earrings before coming to school.  We will keep you posted on their progress.

In Science we began a new topic based on Evolution and Inheritance.  We have asked all  pupils in Panther class to bring in a few photographs of themselves and their family as we will be looking at inherited traits and characteristics next week.  They will need these photographs for their science lesson next Friday.
