Weekly Update - 8.11.19
Miss Asker and Mrs Hatch - 08 Nov 2019
I hope that all the children had a really great half term, thankfully the weather wasn’t too miserable. It was lovely to see all the children back in school on Monday ready for a very busy half-term. This week we have welcomed Harmony into Panther class and we are very proud of how well the children have welcomed her and how well she has settled in.
In Maths this week we have looked at using a written method for addition. We have been using counters and base 10 equipment to help us understand our method and we used our reasoning and problem solving skills to help us try to master this skill.
In English the children became NASA/NACA recruits and have been writing historical facts using adverbials and conjunctions for a webpage. They then had a go at writing a job advert for further new recruits.
In topic we launched our new topic ‘Blast Off!’ The children thought about what they already knew about space. We then learnt about early life and career of Neil Armstrong.
In RE we looked at some of the 99 Beautiful Names for Allah and thought about what these told us Muslims believed about God.
We have been rethinking homework in Panther Class and a decision has been made to focus on spellings, reading and maths so there will be no more topic homework.
Maths homework will be online on MyMaths and will be allocated on a Wednesday and must be completed by Monday. Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and will be back in on a Thursday and children will be expected to read 5 times a week at home which must be recorded in their reading record.
With Mrs Hatch, the children enjoyed writing a 'Dog Diary' when they imagined that they were one of the dogs on board the Endurance with Ernest Shackleton. They learned that the specially selected dogs were an integral part of the crew and worked just as hard as the men on board.
To launch our space themed topic the children created some fabulos artwork inspired by the work of Peter Thorpe. The art work is on display in the front of the school - do please take time to come and look at it.
Austin and Enna took part in the Harrogate Sports Partnership cross country on Tuesday. They report:
On Tuesday 5th November we went to Dalby Forest to represent our school in the cross country race. We ran in the Y5 race. It was very muddy and wet and hard plus it was extremely cold. Before we ran, there was a lunch break but we did not have lunch so that we didn’t have a full stomach whilst we were racing. After the race, we were very muddy.

Enna and Austin
Well done both of you. You are great ambassadors for our school!
