Miss Mandelson - 16 Sep 2021

Settling In
Following on from last week's adventures at Ingleborough, it was good to be back at school on Monday so that we could begin to settle in to our new classroom and establish routines.  Comet Class have had a super week and we already have a few children on our recognition board for showing kindness and patience as well as some shining stars awarded for fantastic presentation of maths work, contributions to discussion, writing, drawing and extra-curricular sport:

In English this week, we have looked closely at the covers of two different versions of the same story to make predictions about the possible setting, characters and plot:

The children quickly realised that the statue on the tall column was going to be a central part of the story and, on discovering the title, decided that this must be The Happy Prince.  They also spotted a tiny bird and set to work using a range of library books to identify it as a swallow.  Some super research about swallows followed and the children have embarked on organising the information they have found into an infomation text. We are looking forward to continuing our work on this so that it is ready to share with you next week.

The focus of our maths lessons this week has been representing and partitioning numbers to 1000 in different ways and using our knowledge of place value to solve lots of problems and explain our reasoning.  The children rose to the challenge of recording their answers in both numerals and words, making sure that digits were formed correctly and number words spelt correctly.  It was lovely to see how well the children worked as a team and supported each other through various maths challenges too....and particularly pleasing to see some of the children opting to play some of our maths games during break time.  Well done, everyone! Your enthusiasm for maths has been a joy to witness.

Whilst the younger children joined their friends in Rocket Class for their first swimming session this morning, the Y3 and Y4 children reminisced about their time at Ingleborough, further developing their skills as confident communicators.  Look out for the postman to see the fruits of their labour coming to your door soon!  For a sneaky preview, take a look below:

As you can probably tell, archery was a particular favourite and maybe a sport that some of our children would like to develop further.

Don't forget to head over to the class pages for Rockets (Y2) and Asteroids (Y3/4) to find out what the children have been up to in the afternoons.  And just a reminder that PE kits should be kept at school throughout the week so that the children have them to hand as quite often additional physical activities are scheduled on top of weekly PE lessons.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend.  Let's hope that the sun keeps shining.
