Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 20 May 2021

Team Tiger!
It has been great to see the Tigers pull together and work as a team on all sorts of class projects this week.  Last week the children were getting fed up with all the rain and came up with a plan to make a rain shelter.  This week they set about seeing their plan through to fruition.  It was all hands to the deck as the children worked first to construct the walls and roof:

...before tackling the inside to make it all cosy, complete with shoe rack and a holder for water bottles, just in time for story time:

In actual fact, by then, our shelter was needed more to provide shade from the sun!  Its strength was tested overnight and a few repairs were necessary following a windy night .  We also got to check if it was water-tight later in the day when the heavens opened again!  Unsurprisingly, our rain gauges showed an increase in the amount of rainfall over the last week.  The results seemed to confirm that nearby trees might block some of the rain - the gauges underneath or next to trees contained 3.5 and 3cm respectively.  However, the rain gauge in the flowerbed had collected 5cm of rain.

In Mathematics this week we have moved on to looking at Statistics.  Evie proved herself to be the data-handling queen, quickly getting to grips with using tally charts to collect and interpret data!  We have also taken the opportunity to revise language relating to time including days of the week, months of the year and the seasons.  The Reception children have used their knowledge of the days of the week to make some super weather diaries and have been busily noting down the weather each day.

On Wednesday we had a visitor in school.  Linda came in to talk to us about her visits to Africa.  She showed us some lovely photos as well as bringing in some African objects for us to explore:

The children asked some really insightful questions, and I was particularly proud of Maisie who asked what we could do to help the African children.  Linda has inspired the Tigers to do some fundraising and donate some toiletries and toys to the children.  Watch this space for more information!

Whilst Mrs Clegg was at a meeting on Thursday afternoon, Tigers had Mrs Marley in to do some Art.  The children all produced some lovely zebras and giraffes, using torn paper.  Mrs Marley was full of praise for our sensible, helpful Tigers.  Good job everybody!

As ever, the Tigers have shone like stars for their amazing team work, patience, reading, phonics and maths work...not to mention some excellent writing (take a look at the poems which the Reception children wrote this week!):
