Embracing the Wider World
It has been another busy week in Tiger Class as we have started to look at new texts in English.  This half-term the 'golden thread' which is running through our curriculum is 'embracing the wider world'.  The children have been busy looking for clues to predict the possible setting, characters and events in our first new class book:  Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain.  We looked at two different versions of the front cover:

...and decided that the story was definitely not set in a village like West Tanfield...could we be making a journey to Africa, the children wondered?  And well done to the Reception children who spotted the /ai/ grapheme which they have been practising this week in the words 'rain' and 'plain' - could this be a rhyming text was another thought that came to mind?

In Mathematics, we have continued our work on Fractions.  The older children have moved on from finding half of a shape to finding half of an amount.  We are getting very good at halving numbers and this has also led us to revising the inverse operation of doubling numbers too.  The Reception children worked really well together to prepare a surprise snack for the class this week BUT they had a tricky problem to solve:  we needed to feed 12 people but we only had 6 flatbreads and 6 slices of ham!  Well done to Jessie who realised that if we halved the snacks, we might have enough for everyone.  The children have been keen to explore halving and doubling in the areas this week as well.  Take a look below:

In Maths with Mrs Clegg, we have continued to consolidate our work on place value, and the older children are becoming really adept at explaining the value of each digit in a two digit number.  We have enjoyed using lots of natural resources to represent two digit numbers as well as playing ordering and matching games.  It has been great to see how many children are accessing MyMaths at home too.  Keep up the good work!
The Reception children have been working on recognising numbers using a tens frame.  They noticed straight away that there were two rows of five and so there must be ten altogether because 5+5=10!  Well done Tigers!

We started a new Computing unit this week which is based on data handling.  The older children loved exploring a program on the laptop that allowed them to create pictograms.  There were some sad faces when it was time to turn the laptops off!  We look forward to doing some more of this in the coming weeks.

As ever the Tigers have been shining like stars again this week in all sorts of areas, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, maths and role-play.  Here are just a few examples of their work...

Mrs Clegg was busy attending training on Friday, so a medieval maiden (with qualified teacher status) took the class for the day.  The Tigers enjoyed lots of themed learning in recognition of St George's Day and enjoyed retelling the story of 'George and the Dragon' in a variety of ways.

Finally, we are currently in the process of revamping our outdoor area and are looking for donations that we can upcycle and give a new lease of life to.  If you have any of the following items that you would be willing to donate then we would be most grateful:
  • lengths of guttering, pipes, funnels
  • nuts, bolts, padlocks and keys
  • dressing up clothes and props
  • pans, bowls, spoons etc
  • old equipment such as PC monitors, keyboards etc.
  • large cable reels
Thank you in advance and have a lovely weekend!
