Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 11 Mar 2021

Welcome Back!
We can't tell you how marvellous it has been to see all our Tigers reunited this week!  Their smiles and laughter have been a real tonic to us all and we have been so impressed with the way in which the children have 'hit the ground running' - a real testament to the wonderful work that parents and grandparents have done with the home-schooling during lockdown.

Following on from last week's learning, the children have really embraced our focus on rhyming through the Oi Frog! series of books.  We have met a lot of unusual animals along the way as well as coming up with some very inventive rhymes.  It has been lovely to hear from some parents that this enthusiasm for rhyme has continued when children have returned home too - we hope your children's humour has brightened your days as much as it has ours!

In Maths the children have been learning how useful it is to know by heart the pairs of numbers which make ten.  They have been using these to explore related facts.  For example, if  we know that 6 + 4 = 10, we know that 6 tens and 4 tens is 10 tens (or 60 + 40 = 100).  The younger children had great fun making their own large scale dice game, using jumping frogs to practise counting on all the way up to 20.  It was lovely to see them developing their social skills as they collaborated on this project and took turns to play the game.

We have also enjoyed measuring length and height in Maths.  The younger children have measured objects using cubes and compared objects using "taller than" and "shorter than", whilst the older children have enjoyed using rulers, metre sticks and trundle wheels to measure in centimetres and metres.  The trundle wheels went down very well!

Just a little reminder that there are a lot of outstanding tasks on MyMaths for the KS1 children.  I am not going to set another task this week to give everyone a chance to catch up.  Remember that these tasks help to consolidate the Maths learning done in school, and any errors or misconceptions are flagged up electronically to me so we can address these in school.  I hope you can find a few minutes to set your child off with their MyMaths task, after which they should be able to complete it independently.

This week we have continued our Geography work looking at the four countries of the UK, focusing on Wales.  Following on from last week's celebrations of St David's Day, the children collated all they knew about the green, green land of song and enjoyed a tea party of Welsh cakes and Bara Brith.  A big thank you to Evie who had made a super poster at home - this came in very handy to support the children when they came to write up their Geography work.

This week in Tiger Class children have been shining like stars with all sorts of things including Reading, Writing and Geography...
