Weekly News 31st January

Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 31 Jan 2020

What a busy week!  We have taken part in lots of whole school discussions about how we can improve our school.  We have decided that each week there will be 'Secret Agents' who will look out for exemplary behaviour around school throughout the day.  Children that are spotted by a Secret Agent will be invited for hot chocolate and biscuits with Mrs Taylor.  What a treat!

Another new idea was to re-introduce the 'top table' at lunchtime.  The children that are the smartest and most polite spend Friday lunchtime seated at a decorated table and are served by the staff!  This week Evie, Olivia, Charlie and Daisy were the lucky recipients of this treat!  Well done!

The children have really enjoyed reading our class texts for themselves this week focusing on the dialogue between the witch and Rapunzel - there has been some great cackling, snarling and sneering as the children have tried hard to use expression! In our English with Mrs Clegg we have begun to plan a newspaper article all about 'Little Red'.  The children came up with the great idea of taking our finished products to the village shop to display.  We will let you know when we have completed our newspapers!

Our work on multiplication has continued and the children have made great use of concrete resources to further their understanding of this.  They are beginning to use the x and = signs to record their work.  The younger children have been introduced to the concept of doubling and will continue to consolidate this next week.

In our Maths with Mrs Clegg we were transfixed by a video of Usain Bolt running 100 metres in 9.58 seconds!  As our topic is 'measurement', we were challenged to see how far we could run in 10 seconds.  Ted is in the lead at the moment with a run of 46 metres!  We will continue this next week and let you know if we have any future record breakers in our midst!  I have also set the children up on 'My Maths', an online learning platform.  You will find a letter stapled inside your child's Reading Record with their username and password.  I have already set the children some homework to practise their measuring skills.  Please encourage your child to access this at home to consolidate what we are learning in school.

In RE, the children have been thinking about the stories Jesus told, exploring the theme of the importance of keeping promises through the story of  'The Two Sons'.  Some great discussion took place as the children gave reasons why some promises are easy to keep, some are quite hard and others are impossible to keep!  It was lovely to see how well the children worked together in groups to act out the story too.  We definitely have some future actors amongst us!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.  We can't believe it is going to be February already!
