Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 17 Jan 2020

Onto New Adventures...
Having settled back so well into the new term, the children have really embraced our new themes and topics this week as we head further into the world of traditional tales and fairy stories.  The week began with a mysterious postcard in a yellow envelope which invited the children “to come and join an adventure”.  We looked closely at the image and soon realised that it showed the Marmion Tower.  What’s more, the children spotted a little person peeping out of the window!  This led to a lot of prediction work:  Who was it?  Was it a boy or a girl?  What was he/she doing in the tower?, etc.

There was only one thing to do – we headed down to the Marmion Tower where we found a parcel containing this amazing book:

The children noticed straight away a similarity between the style of this book and the version of Red Riding Hood that they had begun to explore with Mrs Clegg last week!

This week we actually got to read 'Little Red!'  After doing lots of predicting last week we were so excited to see if our predictions were right!  We won't spoil the surprise for any parents that want to read it...but the ending wasn't what we expected!  We also enjoyed reading some different versions of Little Red Riding Hood and finding similarities and differences.

In Mathematics this week, the older children have explored patterns involving multiples of 2, 5 and 10, whilst the younger children have enjoyed collecting large amounts of 'treasure', practising their estimating skills and ability to counting reliably using tens frames.  This has aided early understanding of place value.

In our Maths work on 'measures' we have done a lot of investigating.  Reception and Year One have measured lengths and heights using cubes whilst Year Two have used rulers to measure in centimetres.  Year Two were challenged to answer the question "how long is a piece of string?"

Many thanks to all our families for your contributions and support with our history topic looking at toys from the past.  The children really enjoyed sharing the information they had collected about the sorts of toys their parents and grandparents played with as children.

Looking ahead to next week, we wish Autumn, Ted, Matilda, Olivia and Mark lots of luck as they prepare to represent our school in the inter-schools gymnastics competition on Monday afternoon.  Keep practising the routines over the weekend! Everybody else will continue to develop their gymnastic skills in our Wednesday PE sessions throughout this half term.
