Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 04 Dec 2019

Happy St Nicholas' Eve!
Advent has begun, Nativity rehearsals are in full swing and the glitter and glue season is upon us - Christmas is in sight!  We do hope many families will be able to join us at the St Nicholas Eve patronal celebrations at Tanfield Lodge on Friday evening from 6pm - all welcome.  Another special event will be the Christingle Service at St Nicholas Church on Sunday at 9.30am - this is always a special time for the children who will all receive a Christingle 'orange' to take home.  Please do join us if you can.

It has been as busy as ever in the classroom this week.  We have been immersing ourselves in the Russian traditional tale of Babushka, not only as we prepare to perform it as our Nativity play this year, but also in our English lessons.  The children have thought carefully about the character Babushka - describing her physical appearance with expanded noun phrases and discussing how her character traits change as the story progresses, noting how she has an 'empty heart' when we first meet her but a 'full heart' by the end of the story.

We have also carried on our work on instruction writing by looking at the book 'How to Catch Santa' by Jean Reagan.  We spent a long time exploring the front cover and making predictions about how the characters might catch Santa.  We also came up with our own ideas about how we would catch Santa on Christmas Eve!

It has also been lovely to see the progress that the children are making with their reading of tricky words.  Please make the most of any opportunities to write these words too, as this is still proving challenging for some children.

In Maths we have been counting in twos and exploring odd and even numbers as the older children prepare to learn their two times table.  The children have enjoyed spotting number patterns along the way.  We have also continued to explore 'money' in Maths.  'Money Mark' even opened his own toy shop in the classroom!

Our History work has focused on how the world has changed since Miss Mandelson was born and the children have enjoyed examining a range of artefacts from the 'olden days'!  We are very grateful to Evie's grandma who has donated a wonderful old typewriter for the children to explore.  Thank you so much, Mrs Stainthorp.  Being able to handle artefacts rather than just see them in photographs is such a fantastic learning experience for the children.  Mrs Marley prepared a lovely lesson focusing on the children's favourite toys and we shall go on to compare these with toys from the past when we continue with our History work next week.
