Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 20 Nov 2019

All Change!

As we dive deeper into our topic 'Changes', we have been making a few changes to our environment this week too!  The adults in Team Tiger have been thinking about how we can make the classroom and learning areas more accessible for the children...and the Tigers themselves have helped with the process with some fantastic suggestions.  This is work in progress and we shall be constantly reviewing the layout until we feel that we have got it just right.

Through both our English work and topic work at the beginning part of the week, we have been discussing how we change as we get older.  This has also overlapped with Science work on the human life cycle.  The children have planned a story about themselves following a similar format on the patterned text 'Once There Were Giants'.  Please look out for some 'Big Talk' homework which can be found on the 'Homework' page, to help the children to prepare for an extended writing task next week.  The Tigers have also enjoyed seeing Mrs Marley this week whilst Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg have been at meetings.  She has done some lovely work on family trees with the children.

In Maths, we have continued to explore addition and subtraction in the context of 'number families'.  The children have remembered that addition is commutative whereas subtraction is not, as well as learning that subtraction is the inverse of addition.  We have been excited to realise that if we know one number fact then we know a further three to make up the family - Buy one and get three free!  For example if we know 15 + 5 = 20, then we also know 5 + 15 = 20, 20 - 15 = 5 and 20 - 5 = 15.
Towards the end of the week we have been learning about money; recognising coins and ordering them by their value.  We now call Mark 'Money Mark' as he is a whizz with money!  He recognises all of the coins and can use several coins to make a total amount to buy items from our classroom 'shop.'

The older children have received new reading diaries this week and have made a pact that everyone will remember to complete the ten minute homework task on the right-hand page each weekend ready to share in reading time on a Mondays.  Please help your child to rise to the challenge by providing an opportunity to do this, and prompting them if necessary.  We are very grateful to Mrs Khan who has started as a volunteer, coming in to hear children read on a weekly basis.  If you or anyone you know are interested in spending some time reading with the children, please do let us know.  It is always very beneficial for the children to have some individual time sharing a book with an adult.  The children are all progressing well with the reading of their Tricky Words which were sent home two weeks ago.  Please could you also practise writing them at home as this is still proving challenging for some of the children.  Thank you for your support.
