Weekly News 15th November 2019

Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 13 Nov 2019

The Tigers have had a great week and it has been lovely to see their enthusiam as we have dived deeper into our new topic.  In English we have continued to explore 'Once There Were Giants', making inferences about the characters and how they are related to one another to make a family tree.  The children have been thinking about generations in their own families and are keen to make their own family trees - maybe you could have a go at mapping one out at home to see how everyone is related to one another.

In English with Mrs Clegg we have been learning how to write a set of instructions.  We worked in groups to write a set of instructions for 'how to make a jam sandwich.'  We then followed our instructions and we ended up with lots of funny results, including whole jars of jam between bread, plain bread and no bread but just jam!  Unfortunately the website is very temperamental today and the photos won't upload so I will try again next week!  After unsuccessfully making our sandwiches we read 'Pass the jam, Jim!'  Now we know that our instructions need to start with imperative verbs and they need to be written in clear, numbered steps.  We will keep practising next week!

In Maths, we have been practising adding and subtracting ten from two-digit numbers, at first using equipment to explore this before moving on to practising this mentally.  The younger members of the class have been introduced to the +, - and = signs so that they can record what they have done using a number sentence.  They have also been practising writing their numbers the right way round!

A big thank you to all who have brought in special books to support our RE work.  The children have really enjoyed sharing these in particular 'The Christmasaurus' by Tom Fletcher, which both Autumn and Ted brought in to share.  We have read a couple of chapters and the children are hooked, many talking of adding this to their Christmas list!

We went on to look at a range of Bibles as special books and, in particular, the story of when Jesus calmed the storm.  The children were particularly captivated by a version of this story which we found in Daisy's Bible and have really enjoyed responding through role-play, art work, design and technology and writing.

There was a sad moment this week when the children realised that our oldest stick insect was not asleep but had died.  With Madeleine's help they organised a lovely burial during their forest school session.  Thank you, Hermione, for making up a little song to give him a good send off.  Before this, many eggs had been laid so we still have quite a few baby stick insects and a 'teenager'!  All helping us with our Science work on life cycles.

The week ended with a super 'bring and buy' sale in aid of Children in Need.  We look forward to finding out how much we have raised!  Thank you for your support!
