Weekly News 8th November 2019

Miss Mandelson and Mrs Clegg - 06 Nov 2019

It was lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and hear all their news.  We have had a great first week back with lots of learning and laughter along the way.  We have had a little peek at Martin Waddell's book 'Once There Were Giants' in English and the children are looking forward to exploring this further next week as they embark on our new class topic 'Changes'.

We have also enjoyed talking about the bonfires and fireworks that we have seen.  We have used our senses to describe what we could see, hear and smell.  We also learnt about 'onomatopoeia'...can your child give you an example?

Reception and Year One children will also find some Tricky Word' flashcards in their bookbags.  Please could you practise at home to read and write these words as unfortunately we cannot use our phonic skills to 'sound them out', we just have to remember them!  You could use these flashcards in lots of different ways e.g. copy them out and then play 'snap!'  Or spread the flashcards around the room and see how quickly your child can bring you the right word.  Or practise saying sentences containing the words...be as inventive as you can!

In Maths, we have started to add and subtract numbers.  The older children have discovered that addition is commutative whereas subtraction is not!  Why not ask them to explain and prove this to you?  We have also started to investigate repeating patterns and have enjoyed using each other to make a pattern!  Ask your child about our 'human patterns!'

In RE, the children have started to think about what is special to us.  We have been sharing objects from home which are special to us, discussing reasons why they might be special.  Next week, we shall go on to think about our favourite books and stories. The children are welcome to bring in a special book to talk about and share with the class.

After a bright, dry morning on Wednesday, the children set off for their weekly adventure in the forest.  They remained undaunted despite the inevitable onset of MORE rain and returned full of excitement about what they had learned about seasonal changes (with some tell-tale signs of hot chocolate round their mouths!)
